[whitespace] movie Good-Bad Movies about San Francisco

Mr. Ricco (1975) Dean Martin is a bearded lawyer in this understated tale of an SFPD police-brutality coverup. The shootout finale is in the Berkeley Art Museum.

What's Up, Doc? (1972) Spookyvision star Barbra Streisand in a fondly remembered faux-screwball comedy.

Big Trouble in Little China (1986) John Carpenter jumps on the Hong Kong bandwagon years before any other American director. Featured: the Hell of the Upside-Down Sinners and Victor Wong's explanation of Chinese philosophy: "Take what you want, a little Taoism, a little Buddhism--it's like a salad bar."

Dream for an Insomniac (1998) Tiffanie Debartolo's love story features every imaginable '90s cliché: Bukowski- and Morrissey-spouting coffeeshop poets, aspiring actresses who pull espresso for a living, a gay subplot, romantic moments on cable cars and sushi bars. Redeemed somewhat by an attractive cast and postfeminist twist on the boy-gets-girl cinematic staple.

The Game (1998) Michael Douglas gets the hard time he ought to have gotten in Basic Instinct.

It Came From Beneath the Sea (1955) Nuclear tests in the South Pacific mutate an octopus, who comes to climb all over the Golden Gate bridge until he's discouraged by authority.
